The Beekeeper and His Bee

bee keeper and bee trunk or treat

Before we completely move into the Christmas season (ummmm what about Thanksgiving??), I wanted to share this year's Halloween costume! You might remember a few years ago, Jeremy and I participated in the Olive Branch YMCA's Trunk or Treat as Harry Potter and Hermione. This year, we went as a beekeeper and a bee. I gotta say, it was pretty great.

Since we had access to an authentic beekeeper suit -- my father-in-law is a beekeeper! -- I thought this idea was perfect for us. It was easy to execute and cost very little. Jeremy wore his Dad's suit, and we stuck little bees that I found at a craft store all over his headgear. The kids kept asking if they were real bees. Too cute! For my bee costume I wore black shoes, black yoga pants, and a black shirt that I already had. I put together a tulle skirt using black and yellow tulle which was crazy easy to do. There are about a million and a half tutorials on Pinterest. I made my antennas from craft supplies. The only thing I bought were the wings. I was going to attempt to make them, but I found a good deal, and figured they would totally make the outfit. They did!

Trunk or Treat Beehive

Luckily, the weather participated this year and we were able to actually decorate our car... like a beehive. It was extremely simple. We used plastic yellow tablecloths from the dollar store to wrap the trunk. The stripes were black streamers, also from the dollar store. We blew up some yellow balloons from, you guessed it, the dollar store and drew hexagons and bees on them. The "honey" sign I made using paper I had at the house, and the little bees were made using extra tulle from my skirt!

We were one of the only cars at this particular Trunk or Treat that didn't do something traditionally Halloween -y and scary. Halloween doesn't have to be about ghosts, goblins, and spiders. You can do cute things, too!

What did you dress up as this year?? Leave links if you blogged about it!

Harry Potter Trunk or Treat

Harry Potter Trunk or Treat // Ten Feet Off Beale http://www.tenfeetoffbeale.com
This year, the Olive Branch YMCA had a Trunk or Treat. I was so excited to participate and had been working for a while to pull together our theme: Harry Potter. Well, it rained on Halloween sooo they moved it inside! No worries, we were still able to participate and we had a great time. Not only were most of the kids (and parents) recognizing Jeremy as Harry Potter, but it's also so fun seeing how excited kids get over candy.

So yeah, we clearly got really into it. The best part? Most everything was handmade, thrifted, or things we already had!

I made some Hogwarts house crest bunting out of felt I already had and we threw together a Hogwarts using empty boxes and things we had recycled.

The tablecloths and fabrics were Halloween decorations and other things I just happened to have. The chalkboards are normally hanging in our kitchen! Jeremy just got really creative and used his artistic abilities to make them "Harry Potter-y". They looked amazing!!

I found the ties online for suuuuper cheap and found the perfect skirt and vest for me at Goodwill. Everything else are things we already had in our closets... yes, even the Gryffindor scarf #imahugedork

I'm really glad we chose a theme. It made it fun to decorate and I liked having a cute couples costume with Jeremy. We're already talking about how we're going to top ourselves next year!! Any suggestions?

Happy Halloween from Harry and Hermione!! I'm hoping to get some more pictures tonight at Trunk or Treat!! Guys, we seriously went all out with our Harry Potter themed decorations. The best part? It's mostly all homemade, thrifted, or things we already had lying around. I hope it doesn't rain on us!!

What are you being for Halloween this year?
