Thousand Islands

Ten Feet Off Beale Thousand Islands Embroidery Hoop // http://www.etsy.com/shop/tenfeetoffbeale

I was recently asked to make a custom embroidery hoop depicting the Thousand Islands. I don't know about you, but I had never heard of this place! Apparently there's a magical place that straddles Canada and the US border of New York. There are thousands of little islands in varying sizes. Some are only big enough to hold one house.

Meredith sent me the picture below and said that that is pretty much what it's like there! Um, how awesome is that?!

She also wanted me to include one of the mottos of the Thousand Islands, "How beautiful it is to do nothing, and then rest afterward."

This is what I stitched up for her! This is exactly why I love making custom hoops. They're unique, special, and I'm always learning something new.

PS. "Married & Bright" is now listed in my shop!!

  1. So cute. I love that. Any chance you would make another one? I love it! You did an amazing job! I live in Florida and although I don't like missing out on the seasons I do love being near the beach. I want a beach house sooo bad.

  2. This is the 1000 Islands in the mighty St. Lawrence River. There are more than 1800 islands in this part of the River - some so large there are roads and bridges and some very small. To be considered an island - it has to have 6 square feet of land, and 1 tree... This island is right beside the famous Boldt Castle on Heart island - google that and you will see. The tour boat captains tell the story - George Boldt (Waldorf Astoria Hotel fame) built the castle for his wife Louise, and the wee house you see in the picture for his mother-in-law...

  3. Oh my goodness, I want to move there! Your hoop depicts it perfectly, I think.

  6. Alyssa, each day I have a google alert for Thousand Islands and I received a link to your webpage

I love it! I am the editor of an online magazine - www.thousandislandslife.com. We have 5,000 subscribers, but that only means that they have given me their email and I can send them a pointer to the next issue - we publish once a month on the 15th.

I see by your article that the "wee house" is a consignment you did for a customer. I would love to publish the photo of your embroidery as an illustration for my Thousand Islands Life in November issue. If you go to the site you will see I choose a photo each month for my "from the editor" article. This past month it is a red leaf (October '13).

Could you ask permission from the person who asked you to do this? and if they agree, I will be thrilled. I will put a link to your webpage and I can add anything you like in the caption.

I will also let the owners of the house know - I can tell you 5001 readers will smile from ear to ear as it is a photograph that we all recognize.
